What is the G.I. Bill? How does it work?

The G.I. Bill, signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1944, is a program that helps military veterans pay for college and job training after they finish their service. To be eligible, veterans typically need to serve at least 90 days of active duty or be discharged due to a service-related disability. The G.I. Bill covers tuition, books, and other education-related expenses, making it easier for veterans to continue their education once they've completed their service.

What types of programs does the G.I. Bill cover? 

The G.I. Bill covers a wide variety of educational opportunities, such as:

How much money does the G.I. Bill provide for a veteran's education?

The amount of tuition and fees covered by the G.I. Bill depends on the amount of time a veteran has spent in active duty or the type of educational program they're enrolled in. Generally:

  • In-state tuition and fees at public colleges and universities, trade schools, vocational schools, and certificate programs are covered
  • Tuition and fees at a private or foreign institution will be covered up to $28,937.09 per year, as of 2024.
  • Students taking more than 7 credits can receive a monthly housing allowance based on the location of their school.
  • Students completing an online education can receive a housing stipend of up to $1,177.50 per month, as of 2024.
  • Students taking more than part-time credits can receive up to $1,000 per year for books and supplies.
  • Veterans may have their test fees up to $2,000 covered by the G.I. Bill for a job that requires a license or certification.
